Preparing for a toast by scouring through countless best man speeches can be boring and frustrating but that was my starting point when John asked me to be his best man!
I sort of guessed that when my buddy John got married I would have to write a funny best man speech. You see John is a bit of a comedian and he makes me and all our friends laugh. He loves to party and appreciates the fun things in life.
He has always been a great friend to me and has helped me out of numerous jams and even introduced me to my wife Deborah. In fact when Debs and I got hitched John was my best man and he gave such a great speech that people still talk about it today, especially whenever my wife mentions our wedding day.
As far as best man wedding speeches go John’s was one of the best I ever heard. I must confess that because of that fact and because John is such a close friend I was very anxious about writing my bestman wedding speech.
I began by reading over other people’s best man speeches and even tried to use some copyright free bestman speeches. I was doing well until one day I decided to watch a few YouTube videos for added inspiration and was horrified to find two videos that, between, seemed to be using all my speech!
I learned a valuable lesson that day – never use a free best man speech!
I had worked for weeks on that damned speech and now it was all for nothing. I was so shook up by the incident that I scraped the whole speech and started again from scratch. Even the jokes I had taken from other funny bestman speeches got binned!
I will tell you more of my story in coming posts but for now the key to getting started is just to start. Write something. Write anything. You can use other best man speeches for inspiration and even take pieces from them and alter it to suit your own situation.
